Senior Metrologist Type I

Salary: Competitive Location: Dhahran JOB PURPOSE BAE Systems is the UK Government’s nominated Prime Contractor (PC) under the Government-to-Government arrangements that are in place to provide equipment, support and training to Saudi Arabia. We provide maintenance of Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) aircraft and train RSAF personnel safely in a training environment in how to use their aircraft, equipment and weapons. For such maintenance and training, this role is responsible for applying measurement science, mathematics and physics, to develop, document and maintain calibration systems, procedures and methods for Dimensional, Optical, Mass, Pressure, Vacuum, Photometry and Temperature Test Measuring and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE). Evaluate new calibration methods and procedures. Use statistics to analyse measurement standards and processes. Recommend calibration standards and TMDE. Maintain calibration laboratory and quality systems. Perform laboratory and/or departmental administration and management functions.Job AccountabilitiesMaintain traceability by operating an internal comparison measurement program, and sending the appropriate Primary Calibration Squadron (PCS) reference standards away at regular intervals to a higher level calibration laboratory that can provide the required uncertainty of measurement. Ensure that the calibration history of all the reference standards is properly maintained.Undertake the calibration of a wide range of measurement standards for which the PCS has capability. Analyse the results obtained to give estimates of measurement uncertainty, check that the specifications are met and produce certificates of calibration. Maintain appropriate records for all items of TMDE calibrated by the PCS.Participate with Measurement Audit Programmes (MAP’s) and the internal Quality Control system which is in operation in the PCS.Where possible, undertake the repair and overhaul of equipment submitted to the PCS for calibration. Assist with the development of special measurement Techniques and Methods to improve calibration capabilities including the drafting of associated technical calibration procedures.Provide assistance to Secondary Calibration Squadron staff to resolve measurement problems. Mentor the SN Metrology Graduates in the PCS. RECRUITMENT SPECIFICATION Educated to University degree level in Physics / Mechanical Engineering (or have significant work experience and demonstrated academic abilities to waiver this educational requirement). A sound academic background is required in Physics / Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics. The candidate should have a good knowledge of statistics and the methods of estimating the uncertainty of measurement results. An understanding of the international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005 “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories” would be advantageous. Have extensive practical experience in the calibration of TMDE, including diagnostic and rectification work, of which at least 3 years should have been at a Primary level. Should have well-developed problem solving skills and the ability to recognise discrepancies and invalid results. Have a high level of practical experience in the calibration of metrology standards and TMDE, including diagnostic and rectification work, which must include experience at a Primary level. The candidate should have a sound understanding and insight in the following areas: Mechanical disciplines of Dimensional Measurements, Optical, Mass, Pressure and Temperature. The ability to program using HT Basic, NI LabVIEW, Agilent Vee and associated legacy software to communicate with RS232 or IEEE 488 interfaces would be advantageous. A good understanding of RSAF MetCal processes and procedures, and a working knowledge of RSAF Supply and Maintenance procedures is necessary to assist in the internal Quality Control of PCS activities would be advantageous. Must be competent in the operation of Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel, and have a good knowledge of English grammar, being able to prepare reports and letters to a high standard. Should possess high standards of personal integrity, and be well-organised, self-motivated and methodical. The ability to communicate in an open and friendly way, and to work well in a small team, under the guidance of the Chief Metrologist PCS, is essential.
